Partial Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition I: The Lifting Phase Grant Olney Passmore and Paul B. Jackson [email protected], [email protected] 1 Clare Hall, University of Cambridge 2 LFCS, University of Edinburgh Abstract. Though decidable, the theory of real closed fields (RCF) is Though decidable, the theory of real closed fields (RCF) is fundamentally infeasible. This is unfortunate, as automatic proof methods for nonlinear real arithmetic are crucially needed in both formalised mathematics and the verification of real-world cyber-physical systems. Consequently, many researchers have proposed fast, sound but incomplete RCF proof procedures which are useful in various practical applications. We show how such practically useful, sound but incomplete RCF proof methods may be systematically utilised in the context of a complete RCF proof method without sacrificing its completeness. In particular, we present an extension of the RCF quantifier elimination method Partial CAD (P-CAD) which uses incomplete ∃ RCF proof procedures to “short-circuit” expensive computations during the lifting phase of PCAD. We present the theoretical framework and preliminary experiments arising from an implementation in our RCF proof tool RAHD.

Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition in the RegularChains Library

Cylindrical algebraic decomposition (CAD) is a fundamental tool in computational real algebraic geometry and has been implemented in several software. While existing implementations are all based on Collins’ projection-lifting scheme and its subsequent ameliorations, the implementation of CAD in the RegularChains library is based on triangular decomposition of polynomial systems and real root i...

A Successive Resultant Projection for Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition

Abstract This note shows the equivalence of two projection operators which both can be used in cylindrical algebraic decomposition (CAD) . One is known as Brown’s Projection (C. W. Brown (2001)); the other was proposed by Lu Yang in his earlier work (L.Yang and S. H. Xia (2000)) that is sketched as follows: given a polynomial f in x1, x2, · · · , by f1 denote the resultant of f and its partial ...

Improved Projection for Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition

Cylindrical algebraic decomposition (CAD) is an important tool for the investigation of real algebraic and semi-algebraic sets. Introduced by Collins in the early 1970s (Collins, 1975) as the basis of his quantifier elimination method, the algorithm for CAD construction has been steadily improved, and has found application in many areas including stability analysis (Hong et al., 1997) and numer...

Using the Regular Chains Library to Build Cylindrical Algebraic Decompositions by Projecting and Lifting

Cylindrical algebraic decomposition (CAD) is an important tool, both for quantifier elimination over the reals and a range of other applications. Traditionally, a CAD is built through a process of projection and lifting to move the problem within Euclidean spaces of changing dimension. Recently, an alternative approach which first decomposes complex space using triangular decomposition before r...
